"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Tim 2:15 (KJV)
BUT I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT...
We in western society like everything to happen instantly. From the heating and preparation of food in a microwave to getting ice from the ice box in our refrigerator, we do not like the idea of waiting. We want instant communication (from e-mails to texting to the latest and greatest video phone), we want to be able to pop a pill and have instant fitness and weight loss, and we feel almost as if we are the victim of some crime if we do not get instant answers to our questions. If we had questions about geography or nutrition, we used to have to go down to the library and find a reference book on the subject. Now we just "google" it and are disappointed if we cannot find a 2 minute video to explain everything to us. Boy have things changed.
All this has its ramifications, even in Bible study. We desire instant understanding. Yet correct interpretation requires MUCH PRAYER and MUCH THOUGHT.. and dare I say it - much STUDY.
In 2 Timothy 2:7, Paul instructed Timothy - "Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything." There are no short cuts. Only by implementing good study habits and sound thinking can we find the correct interpretation (rightly dividing the word of truth - 2 Tim 2:15) and gain understanding.
Many Christians have had questions concerning Hebrews chapter 6 especially concerning the issue of whether a true Christian can lose salvation. Actually I would go a step further and say that much false teaching is a direct result of an incorrect understanding of the passage. That's why taking the time to study the passage in detail is so very helpful.
I highly recommend the following two sermons (below) by Dr. James White on Hebrews 6 as he goes verse by verse through the passage, providing the necessary biblical context. I trust it will be a blessing to you in your walk with the Lord.
Part 1 - Hebrews 6:1-5
Part 2 - Hebrews 6:4-9
